NCD mortality trends in Sri Lanka and Maldives |
|
Project ID: NC-003 |
Status: Completed |
Master in Public Health student, John Harding from Simon Fraser University, Canada, worked on his master's thesis project at IHP during the summer of 2007. For this, he analyzed mortality databases from Sri Lanka and Maldives to estimate levels and trends in non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality. The analysis included categorizing mortality in both countries into major disease categories, and comparison of mortality levels and trends with other countries. Key findings of this work have been to confirm that age-sex standardized rates of NCDs, in particular heart disease, have been increasing in Sri Lanka, that current NCD mortality rates are higher in Sri Lanka and Maldives than most developed countries, and that NCD and ischaemic heart disease mortality levels are higher in Maldives and Sri Lanka. |
