Rationalising NCD Care in the Maldives

    Project ID: NC-002 Status: Completed

In response to the mounting epidemic of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the country, the Government of Maldives has embarked on an initiative to rationalise and improve the treatment of NCDs in its secondary healthcare facilities. With the assistance of a World Bank financial assistance, Maldives awarded this project, following an international competition, to a consortium involving staff from IHP, HPRA and PWCL in Sri Lanka. This project is the first of its kind in South Asia, in that it seeks to rationalise and improve NCD treatment practices throughout the Maldives public sector, and as such is a pioneering project in the South Asian context. Under this project, IHP staff have reviewed current treatment practices in the Maldives public sector, and based on an international review of best practices and the latest scientific evidence, have developed best practice guidelines and standard treatment protocols for the major NCDs in Maldives, including Ischaemic heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, asthma and COPD. The project developed standard operating procedures to help implement these new treatment protocols, and designed an online computerised patient record and patient management system to support clinical staff in implementing these guidelines. The core project team was advised by a group of leading international experts in medicine and medical informatics, headed by Prof. David Weatherall (Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University), and including other experts such as Prof. Ian Purvez and Prof. Devaka Fernando of the UK.
