    Ruwanthi Elwelagedera presents IHP's work on SPI indices at the Joint ADB/ILO/OECD/RCHSP Technical Workshop on Social Protection Data
    Ruwanthi Elwelagedera presented the work that IHP has been doing to measure the Social Protection Index (SPI) for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, as well collecting the data for ILO's Social Security Index. The technical workshop hosted jointly by the OECD, ILO and ADB, was attended by various country and agency experts, who discussed what had been done in the region, and considered plans for future collaboration. semtw.jpg

    Dr. Rannan-Eliya discusses key issues in health systems research the 4th Annual Nossal Global Health Forum, Melbourne
    Dr Rannan-Eliya, IHP Fellow, visited Australia to participate in the inaugural events of the new Nossal Institute for Global Health AusAID hub for health financing and health systems. Dr Rannan-Eliya has been asked to serve on an advisory panel assisting the new Nossal hub as it develops its workplan to become a critical knowledge resource for AusAID's expanding health portofolio. At the fourth global health forum organized by the Institute, Dr Rannan-Eliya, shared recent experience in health systems research capacity building and collaborative work on health systems. This included presenting the work of the WHO Alliance on HSPR Biennial Review (Sound Choices), and the recently completed World Bank case studies on good practices in health financing, which included Sri Lanka. nossalmap.jpg

    Dr. Rannan-Eliya leads WHO Seminar in Maldives on the Social Determinants of Health
    Dr Rannan-Eliya, IHP Fellow, participated as the chief speaker at a national workshop in Mal�, Maldives, organized by WHO and the Maldivian health ministry, to discuss the issues raised by WHO's work on Social Determinants of Health. The work of the WHO Commission on SDH was presented, and then participants from the Maldives discussed what infomation existed in the Maldives on these issues, and the need and potential for future research in this area. Dr Rannan-Eliya subsequently made visits to health ministry counterparts and other government agencies to discuss these issues further. IHP has been previously supporting WHO in the SEAR region by coordinating the study on social determinants of maternal and child health in several regional countries. csdh.jpg

    Dr. A.T.P.L. Abeykoon elected Secretary General of the Asian Population Association for 2009-2010
    Dr. A.T.P.L. Abeykoon, Senior Fellow, was elected�to the post of�Secretary General of the Asian Population Association (APA) for the two year period 2009 to 2010.     IHP research team presents findings on the impacts of ageing in Sri Lanka at World Bank Workshop
    Concluding a major two year collaborative effort to examine the impact of ageing on Sri Lanka, the World Bank held a national workshop to present and discuss the findings of its Sri Lanka Aging Study, at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo. Dr Rannan-Eliya, Dr Abeykoon, Dr Reggie Perera, Tharanga Fernando and Ruwanthi Elwalagedara all participated. Amongst the various analyses presented, the IHP team shared the findings of the IHP studies which developed population projections for Sri Lanka (led by Prof Indralal de Silva), examined disability trends amongst the elderly, developed a cost projection model for future health spending, and examined the impacts of increasing NCDs on the health system. After the workshop, Dr Rannan-Eliya participated in a press conference for the media together with World Bank country director, Ms Naoko Ishii, and other experts. ageingsl.jpg

    Dr Rannan-Eliya and Dr Samarage (MOH) participate in WHO Conference on Revitalizing Primary Healthcare, Jakarta
    On the thirtieth anniversary of the Declaration of Alma-Ata on Primary Health Care, WHO SEAR organised a major conference of regional policymakers and experts to discuss how primary healthcare in the region could be strengthened. The conference, held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 6-8 August, was attended by Dr Halfdan Mahler, Emeritus DG of WHO, and over 200 other dignitaries. Dr Rannan-Eliya (IHP) and Dr Samarage (MOH) participated as members of the Sri Lanka delegation. Dr Rannan-Eliya acted as a resource person for the meeting, presenting recent findings on the socioeconomic determinants of health in the region, and then acting as facilitator for one the working groups. The conference concluded by agreeing a number of key recommendations to forward to the WHO SEA Regional Committee meeting in September 2008. use.jpg

    The Fifth Equitap Meeting is held in Korea
    The Equitap network started its Fifth Meeting in Seoul, Korea. This two day meeting, hosted by the OECD Korea Center, is the first meeting of the network since the 2005 meeting held in Kandalama, Sri Lanka. Old and new partners will be discussing the plans for Equitap research during the next two years, and reviewing past efforts.

    Dr, Rannan-Eliya presents at the ILO Asia-Pacific Regional High-Level Meeting on Socially-Inclusive Strategies to Extend Social Security Coverage
    Dr Rannan-Eliya, IHP Fellow, gave a key note presentation to the plenary sessions of the High-level meeting of government offiicals and experts organized by ILO to discuss the challenges facing social protection in Asia. His presentation focused on the challenges in expanding health social protection, and the lessons learned from both global and regional experience, including that of Sri Lanka. The Hon Minister for Labour, Mr Athauda Seneviratne and a delegation from Sri Lanka also participated.

    Dr. Rannan-Eliya participates in the UNICEF Consultation on Equity in Access to Quality Health Care for Women and Children in Halong Bay, Vietnam
    As part of efforts to reduce inequalities in access to maternal and child health care in Viet Nam, the Vietnamese health ministry and Unicef held this consultation with national and regional experts to develop national strategy options. IHP supported this workshop by preparing a review of regional experience in reducing MNCH inequalities. Dr Rannan-Eliya's presented this work at the meeting, and participated as a resource person in the subsequent working groups. An outcome of the workshop was a set of recommendations that were taken to the Primeminister's office in Vietnam for further action.
