Social Protection Indices for Sri Lanka and Maldives |
|
Project ID: SP-002 |
Status: Completed |
As part of an effort to systematically profile the levels of social protection in Asian countries, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has supported evaluations of social protection in its member countries. This work involves expanding coverage of the ADB Social Protection Index (SPI) to all ADB member states. The SPI takes into account the level of spending on social protection programmes, as well as the extent to which these programmes reach the poor. IHP staff worked through HPRA to develop the SPI estimates for both Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The final report presenting SPI indices for Asian countries was released in media events during June 2008. Sri Lanka was found using the ADB approach to be one of the better performers amongst the Asian developing countries in ensuring social protection, ranking 9th overall, after countries such as Japan and Korea. |
