The main objectives of the Anti Malaria Campaign (AMC) are: 1. to eliminate indigenous P. falciparum malaria by the year 2012, 2.to eleiminate indigenous P. vivax malaria by the year 2014, 3. to maintain zero mortality from malaria in Sri Lanka, 4. to prevent reintriduction of malaria from other countries. To achieve the above objectives, enhancing malaria surveillance by strengthening malaria surveillance system is an essential component of the proposed malaria elimination programme strategies in Sri Lanka. For this purpose it is necessary to develop strategies to strengthen malaria case surveillance in both government and private sector health care facilities. The existing routine surveillance system has not been able to successfully deal with this and therefore special efforts to enhance this system of reporting is now thought to be necessary to be established to overcome this problem. IHP has been assigned the task of developing a complementary reporting system and pilot it in two districsts (Monaragala and Anuradhapura). Based on the outcome IHP will then design a national complementary reporting system for the private health sector that could be implemented throughout the country. |
