    Shanaz Saleem awarded gold medal for best paper at the South Asian Economics Student�s Meet (SAESM)
    Shanaz Saleem was awarded a gold medal for best paper at the South Asian Economics Student�s Meet (SAESM). SAESM, a conference for students pursuing their first course in Economics across universities from different countries of South Asia. The conference consists of a paper presenting session, quiz competition and the budding economist contest. This year�s SAESM was the 6th of its kind and was held at Hotel Sheraton, Dhaka Bangladesh on the 9th and 10th of December 2009. Students from South Asian Universities presented papers under 8 different topics. A paper on �Food security� presented by Shanaz Saleem was awarded a gold Medal at this event!! SAESM121209.jpg

    National workshop on social disparities in the Maldives
    Dr. Rannan-Eliya attended and gave the keynote presentation at the National Workshop on Social Determinants of Health, held in Mal�, 23-25 May. The workshop was convened to discuss the findings of IHP's analysis of social disparities in the Maldives, with both local experts and stakeholds, as well as with regional experts from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh and Bhutan. The IHP report was well-received and commended by meeting participants, including Dr Aminath Jameel, Maldives Minister of Health and Family, and Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Maniku, Vice-President of the Maldives.The event was organized by the Ministry of Health and Family in the Maldives with the assistance of WHO.     Dr. Shanti Dalpatadu appointed member of the National Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) Streering Committee
    The Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition has finalized the National Policy and Strategie Framework for prevention and Control of Non Communicable Disease. As the implementation of the NCD policy lies with different Directorates, provincial health authorities and other non health stakeholders, it was decided to establish a National NCD Steering commitee to facilitate this process.     The inaugural meeting of the National NCD Steering committee was on the 17th of November, 2009 at the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition.

    The paper on "The Progress and Challenges in Achieving the Health-related Millenium Development Goals in South Asia" prepared by A.T.P.L. Abeykoon Senior Fellow, Lara Brearly Research Associate and Sayuri Jinadasa Intern, was presented by Dr. Abeykoon at the UNESCAP Expert Group Meeting on " Acheiving the Health-related Millenium Development Goals in South Asia" held at teh ESCAP Secretarial, on 20-21 August, 2009.     Launch of Japanese Report to G8: Sri Lankan experts recommend using financial crisis to advance global health
    The recently launched Japanese report to the G8 embodies recommendations to the G8 on how they can help to improve the health of low-income countries. The Takemi report was prepared by a team of leading international health experts from Japan and the USA - guided by reviewers and advisors from around the world - who looked at the problems of coordinating global health policy, the health workforce, health information and health financing.

    At the request of the Takemi Taskforce organized by the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) Sri Lankan experts at the Institute for Health Policy (IHP) took the responsibility for the analysis of financing issues.

    Urban HEART Advisory Group meets for first time in Kobe, Japan
    Urban HEART is a new initiative of WHO Kobe Centre, which is working with cities around the world to improve health inequities through intersectoral action. Dr. Rannan-Eliya, who was appointed to an Ad-hoc Adviisory Group, met with other members of the Group over two days to reviiew the tool that the project is using with partner cities to asesss inequalities. Also participating in the meeting were other members of the Advisory Group including Professor Sir Michael Marmot, who chaired the recently concluded WHO Commission on Social Determinants, and two other commissioners.
